Today we had an orientation meeting with Charlotte in the afternoon, so we decided to make a day of it and do some exploring. Above is a shot of the Great Blue Rooster (well, what would you call it?) in Trafalger Square.
We started the day with a visit to the Camden market. The Camden Town tube stop is only two away from East Finchley, so it was a short ride. Turns out that Sunday is the big day for the market. From 1 to 5 Sunday afternoon, the Camden Town stop is exit only to cut down on the mass of people crowding on the platforms. In the morning, the crowds weren't so bad.
The Camden Market flows into the Camden Locks Market over by the canal. Out on the street, there mostly shops of a wide range of funky sorts. Once you enter the Lock area, It is an extensive warren of stalls and shops that seem to go on and on for ever.
There is a variety of statues scattered about the area that try to invoke the 19th century.
The highlight of the afternoon was a visit to the the British Museum. We wandered a while among the Assyrian friezes. They are simply amazing.
This close-up of a section of one panel shows hunting dogs. The detail in these 2500 rock slabs is truly remarkable. You can see the dog's muscles and ribs and the structure of the peoples feet. I've got more of these on my flickr account.
Clearly, the museum will be a place I visit many times. Being able to make leisurely visits here is one of my priorities.
